The theater was built in 1948, in what was known as Whitten Park. The first movie shown at the Park was Romance on the High Seas. Over the years, the theater has hosted a variety of performances, including plays, musicals, concerts, and dance recitals. In 1998, the theater was renovated and expanded to include a new lobby, a rehearsal hall, and a scene shop. In 2003, the theater was renamed The Park Center to reflect its role as a regional performing arts center.
The Park Center is a vital part of the Hayward community. The theater offers a variety of performances throughout the year, as well as educational programs and workshops. The Park Center is also home to a number of resident companies, including the Hayward Community Theatre, the Northern Lakes Symphony Orchestra, and the Hayward Dance Company.
